Installing OpenSimulatorA guide to setting up opensimulator under Linux The Open Simulator is a 3D virtual world server application that can provide facilities similar to those found on SecondLife. One server machine can provide a four region opensimulator environment. This represents an equivalent of an area of 512 x 512 m² in which you can use to create your own world. The OpenSimulator allows you to connect with the same viewer that you would use with SecondLife and therefore use all the terraforming and construction tools provided within the standard viewer application. The OpenSimulator code is written in C# and therefore requires the latest version of the mono (.NET compatible framework), to run under Linux. A backend MySQL server and an Apache webserver are also required to run Opensimulator in grid mode. Be aware that OpenSim requires that you have a fair amount of technical knowledge in order to set it up. As OpenSim is still at an alpha code maturity stage, there is absolutely no guarantee that all functionality works or is stable. You will learn how to:
We recommend that you also look at combining this workshop with our Working in 3D worlds workshop if you are not familiar with the use of the construction and terraforming tools provided in the SecondLife viewer.
