Intermediate course demonstrating the Audio/Video components in GNU/Linux

This Intermediate Workshop is for those who are having difficulty getting various devices, such as webcams, sound devices, DVD Movie players etc. to work successfully with their GNU/Linux installation.

By the end of your stay, you will learnt the basics of digital re-mastering and sound mixing with Audacity, Lame and Grip, have got the hang of Xine, Mplayer or Kaffeine for playing DVD movies, mastered setting up that webcam and scanner and be able to burn CD's/DVD's with confidence.

Because of the differences in the way that the Linux Kernel versions support various drivers, this workshop includes such topics as searching out suitable drivers for your hardware as well as information on re-compiling the Kernel with specific modules to achieve your objectives.


You will learn about:

  • * Burning CDs and DVDs
  • * Configuration of SANE and Scanning
  • * The basics of the Linux sound system
  • * Compiling Xine or Mplayer with codecs to allow playing of DVD movies
  • * Basics of digital sound re-mastering and mixing techniques

In addition, this workshop also provides insight into areas of such as real-time kernels and the JACK server environment, and audio streaming.
